Know When To Stand Down… The Day Before FOMC

Posted: Tuesday July 28, 2026

☀️ AM BRIEFING

Today is the day before FOMC, and this ES futures morning briefing is built around one question… should you even be trading? The Tip of the Day is know when to Stand Down. We map the day before FOMC, why it can turn into crappy price action, and how the pre-flight check tells you if you have earned the right to open your platform. We also walk the upgraded end-of-day replay tool, the Battle Plan anatomy, and where NQ, the Dow, and the Strong Levels sit heading into the open. If you slept well and your head is clear, you are cleared for takeoff. If not, keep your powder dry and live to trade another day.

TIP OF THE DAY — KNOW WHEN TO STAND DOWN

Yesterday was one of those days. The Tip of the Day is know when to Stand Down. Trading requires the best you. Before you touch a single contract, you have to check that box honestly.

Ask yourself the real questions. Do you have anything going on in your personal life? Are you upset about something medical? Upset about your wife, your parents? If the answer drags you off center, the market will find it.

Trader Lesson 1

Before you trade, confirm you are the best of you… emotionally, physically, and in your personal life. If you cannot check that box, Stand Down.

There is certain price action you love and certain price action you loathe. If you are in the kind you loathe, keep the platform closed. Protect yourself from yourself.

THE PRE-FLIGHT CHECK — HAVE YOU EARNED THE RIGHT?

Should you be trading? That is today's live question, and it deserves an honest answer every single morning. Treat it like a pilot's pre-flight check. You do not take off until every box is green.

  • Emotionally ready: Are you centered, or carrying something heavy from outside the charts?
  • Physically ready: Did you sleep well? Are you hydrated? Tired traders make tired trades.
  • Right location, right equipment: A hotel room on a conference trip is not your trading desk. One trader flagged he will Stand Down until Thursday when he is home… smart move.
  • Enough time: A doctor's appointment in an hour is not enough runway to enter, manage, and exit a trade.
  • Battle Plan reviewed: It takes 3 to 5 minutes. Check the economic calendar while you are there.
  • Written trade plan and max loss: Do you have a written plan? Are you prepared for a max loss day? Will you trade your system?

Part of your system should BE these questions. Am I emotionally ready? Am I physically ready? Do I have enough time? Say yes to all of it and you are cleared for takeoff.

Trader Lesson 2

Run a full pre-flight check before you open your platform. You have to EARN the right to trade… emotionally, physically, time, plan, and calendar all green before takeoff.

TRADER HOMEWORK — THE END-OF-DAY REPLAY, UPGRADED

Each night in the Battle Plan you get a link to the Battle Plan replay and the end-of-day charts. They load about 15 minutes after the close. Trade your homework… this is where reps are built.

The end-of-day chart opens clean. No clutter, just the levels and the structure, pure and simple. Press the spacebar and the training begins. A few things to know:

  • Chart control: Right and left arrows switch the 1-minute and 3-minute charts. Up and down arrows speed up or slow the playback. Hit the end button to jump straight to the whole chart if you just want to mark your exact levels.
  • Layers: Turn on the Strong Levels to see how they related to the day. New feature… you can now turn on 15-minute candles, because sometimes a candle deceives you on how big or small it really was.
  • Horizontal debrief card: The stats card is now horizontal to match your monitors, showing where you entered and all your stats. Open the debrief for a short note on the day.
  • Trader comments: Notes get left at specific candles, and you can reply right there… a text thread on the tape itself.
  • Replay any day: Each day of the week fills in as the week goes. With 746 sessions in the archive, hit Random Day to pull a fresh one and train blind.

In the sample replay off a gap up, the tape turned. That called for a turnaround trade, not a short. One trade banked about six points, then price came back… and thanks to strong group rules about never letting a trade go against you, that runner got taken to break even. Sometimes all you need is a piece of the move.

Take the break-even trade. Take the break-even trade. Take the break-even trade… or take the small loss. It's okay.

Trader Lesson 3

Never let a winner turn into a loser. Take the break-even trade or the small loss without hesitation… and remember, sometimes all you need is a piece of the move.

BATTLE PLAN ANATOMY

Yesterday we covered the mappings and the Strong Levels. Today we open up the Battle Plan itself so you know exactly what you are reading each morning. It has two halves.

The larger half is the review section, and it is unlocked for members. It is a trade-by-trade review of what happened today, sorted by the three ways we make money… Power Plans and Core Strategy. Inside it you get the recap video, the trade analysis, the Tip of the Day, the trader homework, the scoreboard, and the economic calendar for the next two days.

The smaller half is the actual Battle Plan… the mapped-out trade ideas and notes, the market context, and the ES price map. At the top sits a floating audio, typically 3 to 5 minutes, that reads most of it to you. It stays short on purpose. Quick and to the point, so you can get through the whole plan fast and get on with your morning.

MARKET CONTEXT — STUCK IN THE MIDDLE BEFORE FOMC

Tomorrow is FOMC, which makes today the day before FOMC. If you use the journaling software with the Chrome extension, mark today as the day before. The week gets heavier from here… Wednesday brings FOMC, plus Microsoft and Meta earnings.

Here is the map. NQ finally reached the second bounce level from last week, dipping its toe into both of those levels and reacting there. The Dow is having none of it. So NQ is doing its thing, the Dow is doing another, and we are stuck in the middle the day before FOMC. That is shaping up to be crappy price action.

  • Preferred trade: Dip the toe down into the Battle Plan zone. That is still the preferred idea.
  • If the Dow turns: If the Dow rolls into a strong down move, read the Battle Plan notes. The notes are very, very important.
  • Overnight Strong Levels: They did nice work overnight, with a clean bounce off a Strong Level. From here the hope is a slingshot back up to re-challenge the Bull Bear Line, then a catapult above toward last week's Bull Bear Line.

Trader Lesson 4

After a high-energy day, expect a dull one. Knowing that pattern last night meant no forced charting and no forced trading… keep your powder dry and live to trade another day.

"Have I earned the right to even open my platform? If you can say yes to that, you are cleared for takeoff."

❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

COMMON QUESTIONS FOR ES FUTURES TRADERS

What does Stand Down mean in futures trading?

A: Stand Down is the decision to not trade because you are not at your best. It applies when your emotions, your health, your sleep, or your personal life would compromise your judgment. In this ES futures morning briefing it is the Tip of the Day… if you cannot honestly confirm you are the best version of you, you keep the platform closed and protect yourself from yourself.

How do I know if I should be trading today?

A: Run a pre-flight check before the open. Confirm you are emotionally ready, physically ready with good sleep and hydration, in the right location with the right equipment, and have enough time to enter and manage a trade. Then confirm you have reviewed the Battle Plan, checked the economic calendar, written a trade plan, and are prepared for a max loss day. Only when every box is green have you earned the right to trade.

Why is the day before FOMC important for ES futures?

A: The session before an FOMC decision often produces thin, choppy, inventory-adjusting price action as the market waits on the central bank. Traders frequently sit stuck in the middle of a range with no clean direction. Mark the day in your journal as the day before FOMC so your records show why the tape behaved the way it did, and size down or Stand Down if the price action turns messy.

What is a bounce level in the Battle Plan?

A: A bounce level is a mapped price zone from prior sessions where the market is expected to react. In this session NQ reached the second bounce level from last week and dipped its toe into both levels before reacting. Bounce levels give you pre-planned locations to look for a turnaround rather than chasing price in the open.

How should I manage a runner that comes back against me?

A: Never let a winner turn into a loser. Micros Trader group rules are strict… take the break-even trade or take the small loss the moment a trade rolls back on you. Sometimes all you need is a piece of the move, so booking part of a winner and protecting the rest at break even is a discipline, not a failure.

What is the end-of-day replay tool and how do I use it?

A: It is the trader homework attached to each night's Battle Plan, loading about 15 minutes after the close. Press the spacebar to start the replay, use the right and left arrows to switch the 1-minute and 3-minute charts, and the up and down arrows to change speed. You can jump to the full chart with the end button, layer on Strong Levels and new 15-minute candles, read the horizontal debrief stats, and replay any day of the week or a random session from the 746-session archive.

What is inside the Micros Trader Battle Plan?

A: The Battle Plan has two parts. The larger review section is a trade-by-trade breakdown of the day organized by the three ways we make money, Power Plans and Core Strategy, and includes the recap video, trade analysis, Tip of the Day, trader homework, scoreboard, and a two-day economic calendar. The smaller Battle Plan section holds the mapped trade ideas, notes, market context, and the ES price map, with a 3 to 5 minute floating audio that reads most of it to you.

Why do you say to keep your powder dry after a high-energy day?

A: A high-energy session is often followed by a dull, low-opportunity one. Recognizing that pattern lets you skip the forced charting and forced trades that eat capital and confidence. Keeping your powder dry means preserving your account and your energy so you live to trade another day when a real edge shows up.

What is the Bull Bear Line and how is it used?

A: The Bull Bear Line is the key level dividing bullish and bearish bias on the map. In this session the hope was a slingshot back up to re-challenge the Bull Bear Line, then a catapult above it toward last week's Bull Bear Line. It gives you a clear reference for whether control is with the bulls or the bears.
