Never Add to a Losing Trade

The one rule George drills harder than any other… because adding contracts to a loser halves your distance to a blown account.

From the free MicrosTrader Trading Library… 140 lessons mined from 1,042 live ES and MES futures sessions taught since 2018.

Never add to a losing trade. When a trade goes against you in ES E-mini futures, the instinct is to buy more and lower your average price. Do not. Adding contracts to a loser stacks leverage on a position that is already wrong and shrinks the room you have left before your account is done. This is the line in the sand. It is the number one path to ruin.

This page gathers everything George teaches about the rule across hundreds of hours of live ES and MES micro futures trading… the math that makes averaging down so deadly, the sister rule about never widening a stop, and how George keeps himself from breaking either one when a trade turns ugly.

“"Never ever add to a losing trade when you're scalping futures. Your losing trade does not need more leverage. It is already a losing trade."”

The Math: Adding Halves Your Distance to Blowup

Ask yourself one question when a trade turns red. Would you rather have more room for that trade to work out, or less? You want more points to play with. Every trader does. Adding a contract does the exact opposite… it cuts the distance to blowing your account clean in half.

The damage runs deeper than the account balance. Most disciplined futures traders run a daily loss limit, a hard number that ends the session. Adding leverage burns through that limit twice as fast. So you get hurt on two fronts at once… less room for the trade to recover, and a faster trip to your stop-trading line.

“"If you are in a losing trade, would you rather have more room for that trade to work out or less room? You'd rather the trade to have more points it could play with. But if you add a contract, the distance to blowing your account just dropped in half."”
