Futures Rollover Dates 2026: Contract Rollover, OPEX Fridays & Holiday Weeks
Contract rollover, OPEX Fridays, triple witching, thin holiday weeks, and weak Mondays… the days that trade nothing like the others.
From the free MicrosTrader Trading Library… 140 lessons mined from 1,042 live ES and MES futures sessions taught since 2018.
The calendar moves markets. Certain days trade nothing like a normal session. Contract rollover weeks turn squirrelly. OPEX and triple witching Fridays whipsaw. Holiday weeks go thin and untradeable. Mondays start slow. A futures day trader who reads the calendar knows when to press and when to Stand Down, long before the ES E-mini futures even open.
This page gathers everything George teaches about the trading calendar across years of live ES and MES micro futures sessions… why rollover gets weird, how to survive OPEX and triple witching, when a holiday week is worth skipping, and how volatility itself shifts with the political regime.
“"Contract rollover week, you'll probably roll over your contracts on Tuesday. FOMC next week, Opex next week, end of the month, end of the year. Careful, careful, careful."”

Contract Rollover: When Super Squirrel Comes to Town
Every quarter the ES futures contract expires and traders roll to the next month. Around that switch, price action turns erratic. George calls it one of his least favorite times to trade… "contract rollover is one of my least favorite times to trade… it just takes a little while to get the levels adjusted to the new contract" (Mar 11, 2025). The market is not broken. Your levels are simply pointing at the old contract.
The danger zone stretches wider than one day. George warns the whole cluster around the roll trades poorly… "typically the Friday, Monday, Tuesday of contract rollover stinks" (Jun 10, 2026). And the ramp-up starts even earlier. The Thursday and Friday before rollover week can be so treacherous that George stays out entirely.
“"The Thursday and Friday before the week of rollover is very difficult, dangerous price action. I have not opened my trading platform once yesterday or once today. I just don't want to put my account at risk under these conditions."”
