Short Covering Rallies: Why Squeezes Are the Most Explosive Moves in ES
Why an overly-short ES futures market rips 75 to 500 points on one good headline… and why you never stand in front of it.
From the free MicrosTrader Trading Library… 140 lessons mined from 1,042 live ES and MES futures sessions taught since 2018.
A short covering rally is a violent move higher, powered by trapped sellers forced to buy back their shorts. When a market gets crowded short after a long selloff, one good piece of news can light the fuse. Shorts scramble for the exits, their buying pushes price up, and that higher price forces the next wave of shorts to cover too. In ES E-mini futures, that feedback loop produces some of the biggest moves you will ever see… 75, 100, 200, sometimes 500 points to the north.
This page gathers everything George teaches about the squeeze across hundreds of hours of live ES and MES micro futures trading. Why it fires. Why you never counter it. And how to be long and aboard the train instead of getting run over.
“"The truth is the market only needed one good piece of news to rip to the north. It got the piece of news. It ripped. Why? Because the market was overly short. And when a good piece of news comes out, it can rip and keep going."”

What Fuels a Squeeze: The Overly-Short Market
Start with the setup. A short covering rally does not appear out of nowhere. It builds. Price grinds down for days. Sellers pile on. Every red candle pulls in fresh shorts who are certain the next leg down is coming. That crowd becomes the fuel. Get the market overly short, and it only needs a spark.
Retail selling is the accelerant. The traders who never met a short they didn't take keep leaning into the move. They short every down candle thinking this is the vomit move lower. It isn't. So they cover. Then they short again. Then they cover again. Every one of those forced buys pushes price higher.
“"The market gets overly short, it short covers. The bears are still in control. They load back up. Pushes down again."”
