Morning Routine for Day Traders: What to Do Before the Open

What to do in the hour before the open… so you arrive prepared instead of scrambling.

From the free MicrosTrader Trading Library… 140 lessons mined from 1,042 live ES and MES futures sessions taught since 2018.

A morning routine for day traders is the fixed set of steps you run before the market opens. Mental training, gratitude journaling, a read of the overnight price action, a check of your news drivers, and the daily AM Briefing. The goal is simple. You want to reach the opening bell settled, informed, and already knowing your plan. George starts thirty minutes early every session and works the same list top to bottom.

This page walks that hour step by step, drawn from years of live ES E-mini futures and MES micro futures sessions. Why George wakes at 4 a.m., what he journals first, how he reads the overnight tape to calibrate his eyes, and where the AM Briefing fits into your pre-flight.

“"We start 30 minutes before the market opens. We do 15 minutes of mental training. Then 10 minutes before the market opens, we update our charts and map out our entries, what we're looking for, where we're at. And then for the next hour and a half, we're on Zoom. We finish at 11:00 Eastern."”

ES futures Battle Plan chart from George’s published record

From George’s published record: Micros Trade Plan #320 — a 20+-point move, mapped in advance.

Wake Early. Get Settled. Nothing Rushed.

Preparation starts before you ever open a chart. George rises at 4 a.m. so the whole routine has room to breathe. That head start separates the trader who reacts from the one who arrives ready.

What does that early start buy you? Room to see clearly. George frames it as a question worth asking yourself… "Are you going to start waking up 30 minutes earlier so all of that is fresh in your mind?" (Nov 22, 2025). Coffee black and strong. Levels mapped. You know where you belong before the first candle prints:

“"I get up at 4 a.m. to get ready for my day. That's just consistency of making sure I am prepared."”
