The Break-In Trade: Why You Shouldn't Chase Breakouts in ES Futures

Why George refuses to chase the breakout… and takes the snap-back that traps everyone who did.

From the free MicrosTrader Trading Library… 140 lessons mined from 1,042 live ES and MES futures sessions taught since 2018.

A break-in trade means you enter before the breakout ever happens. You get positioned early, at the edge of the range, while it's still quiet. Then when price finally clears the level, you're already aboard for the run. George says it plain: he's a break-in trader. He almost never buys the break itself in ES E-mini futures.

This page gathers everything George teaches about entering the break across hundreds of hours of live ES and MES micro futures trading… why chasing the breakout is a losing game, how the snap-back trap sets up the cleanest entry, and how being positioned early is what puts you in a runner when the real move finally rips.

“"I am a break-in trader who holds a runner… maybe possibly about 10% of the time I'll be in a breakout trade. That's when you get those 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100-point runners."”

Break-In, Not Breakout

Start with the identity. Forget hunting breakouts. George hunts the entry that comes before them. A breakout trader waits for price to clear the top of the range, then buys the move. A break-in trader is already long at the bottom, financed and calm, watching the same move pay him instead.

That 10% figure matters. Only about one trade in ten turns into a breakout runner. You cannot force it. You get positioned on the good ones, and every so often the market rewards the patience with a 40, 60, or 100-point move you get to hold as a runner. Chase the break and you show up late every time.

“"Was I anticipating the breakout? Heck no. But was I in a trade that happened to break out? Absolutely."”
