Trading at All-Time Highs: Why It's Hard and How to Handle It

Clear skies above. No structure to lean on. Why record highs are the hardest place on the chart to trade… and how George handles them.

From the free MicrosTrader Trading Library… 140 lessons mined from 1,042 live ES and MES futures sessions taught since 2018.

Trading at all-time highs means trading with nothing above you. No prior high to lean on. No overhead level to short into. No reference from the past to tell you where price stalls. In ES E-mini futures, that empty space overhead is the hardest environment on the chart to read, and it punishes anyone who likes to call tops.

This page gathers everything George teaches about record highs across hundreds of hours of live ES and MES micro futures trading… why the all-time high pulls price like a magnet, why longs and shorts flip once it's taken, which market you actually check to find it, and why calling the top is the fastest way to hand your money to the trend.

“"It is real difficult to trade at all-time highs. You just don't have a whole lot of structure to lean against, and then sometimes the moves are so strong the levels that are going to support price if we come back in are so thin, guys this thing could rip down hard."”

The All-Time High Is the Biggest Magnet on the Chart

Start with the one idea everything else hangs on. The all-time high is the single strongest magnet on the chart. Price wants to touch it. Untested levels above your head pull the market up like gravity in reverse, and the record high pulls hardest of all.

Understand the magnet and one common mistake dies on the spot. Shorting just under an untaken record high fights the pull. You're betting against gravity with the whole market leaning the other way. George names the error plainly… "you're shorting 20 points before the biggest magnet on the chart which is the all-time high up here" (Nov 29, 2024). Twenty points from a magnet is twenty points of fuel working against you.

“"So that all-time high up here is really important. It's the biggest magnet on the chart."”
